What is Center of Mass?<= o:p>

The Center of Mass is a unique point at which an object (or system of objects) balances.  If the “system” is thrown through the air, no matter how chaotically t= he individual objects move, the Center Of Mass will move in a perfect parabola.  Mathematically, the position (p), of the Center Of Mass of a number of objects is defined by: , where n is the number of objects, Mn is the mass of each object, and xn is the position of each object. Essen= tially, it is the point in space about which the mass is evenly distributed. In ord= er to determine the Center of Mass, the rods had to be weighed and measured. 

 

What is Equilibrium?

Equilibrium is a state of rest or bala= nce. There are three different types of equilibrium:

Neutral:  In place the object stays put but when disturbed the object will move and stay put in a = new position.  <= /p>

Stable: A push on the object will result in it returning back to t= he stabilizing point.  If the sys= tem is disturbed the system tends to move to its original starting point.

Unstable: Object will balance until a slight movement causes it to r= e-distribute and search for the pivotal point. If the system is disturbed the system ten= ds to move away from its original position.

The intent of this project is to teach= the physics of the Center of Mass and how the rods of the mobile adjust their position to maintain equilibrium. It will teach people the physics of Cente= r of Mass to find out why the shapes do not fall over or hang at awkward angles.=

 

The Swinging Shells Project floats bet= ween Neutral Equilibrium and Stable Equilibrium.

The Swingin= g Shells Project is a mobile.  It is suspended and able to move dependent upon air flow.  The rods adjust to the air flow and shift itself back to the equilibrium point.  Without knowing the Center of Mass= the mobile would be tilted and off balance. When the mobile is moved the Center= of Mass will also move. The mobile will independently seek a new point of equilibrium. This will always occur when the center is directly below the m= ain pivot point.
